The Town Mouse & the Country Mouse
A country mouse had a friend in town and meeting him on the road one day invited him to dinner. The town mouse accepted the invitation and although the country mouse fed him with all of the best things in his pantry, the town mouse really was appalled at how rough everything was in the country house, and at how poor and frugal his country cousin’s food was.
So the town mouse invited his country friend to dine in town, and, shy and retiring as the country mouse was, his friend’s words moved him to come. So the two of them set off together for the town. Late in the evening they reached the grand house where the town mouse lived. A banquet had been finished and the two mice, famished from their journey, set to eating the leftovers with gusto.
Just when they were so full of food that they could hardly move, some late night revelers burst into the room. Although the mice dragged themselves into corners to find safety, dogs came in with their human masters and barked at the mice, terrifying them. As soon as he had recovered from his shock, the country decided to return to his home. ‘Better to have simple food in safety, than to suffer this kind of excitement,’ were his parting words.
